Key points about the early promise of islet transplantation
A
- The FDA voted to endorse pancreatic islet transplant product for treatment of brittle type1 diabetes that can’t be managed with current therapies.
- They decided to regulate allogeneic islet cells as a biologic (1993).
- Researcher’s from University of Illinois formed a company to file a biologics license application (BLA) to bring allo-islets to market.
- Some in the transplant community feel allo-islets should be regulated as solid organs while granting BLA approval.
