Reactivity Series Flashcards
What is reactivity?
Some elements are more reactive than others. The reactivity of an element is the rate at which it tends to undergo a reaction.
What is a displacement reaction/what happens?
In a displacement reaction, a more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from a compound.
What is the reactivity series?
Potassium Sodium Lithium Calcium Magnesium Aluminium Zinc Iron Lead Copper Silver Gold (Potato Soup Lives Cutely Mearly Always Zoos In Leek Complete Soup Group)
When a metal reacts with a acid what’s the word equation?
Metal + Acid –> Salt + Hydrogen
Gold + Hydrochloric Acid –>
No reaction
What happens when a metal reacts with water?
Metal + Water –> Metal Hydroxide + Hydrogen
What happens when a hydrated compound decomposes?
Hydrated Compound –> Anhydrous Compound + Water
What happens when a metal carbonate decomposes?
Metal Carbonate –> Metal Oxide + Carbon Dioxide
What do sulphuric acid, nitric acid and hydrochloric acid change to?
Sulfate, Nitrate, Chloride
When does a reaction happen in a word equation?
If the compound in the reaction is lower in the reactivity series than the element. If not there is no reaction
If an element displaces a compound is it more or less reactive?
It’s more reactive
When a metal reacts with water is an acid or alkaline formed?
An alkaline solution
When a metal reacts with water or an acid what observations will you see during these reactions?
Fizzing
How can you speed up a reaction?
Heat it up
Describe a test for hydrogen?
Lit splint put it at the end of a test tube with the gas which you’re testing in, if hydrogen is present you’d hear a pop
