Q

How can rusting be prevented

A

Barrier Methods: stops water and oxygen getting to iron
Grease, oil, paint, plastic

Galvanising: coating in zinc
even if barrier is broken, the zinc reacts before the iron

Sacrificial Protection: More reactive metal will react before the iron

Q

Explain Redox ect in terms of electrons and oxygen

A

Oxidation = loss of electrons = gain of oxygen
Reduction = gain of electrons = loss of oxygen
Redox = involves both O and R
Oxidising agent = gives oxygen (it itself is reduced)
Reducing agent = takes oxygen (it itself is oxidised)
