Reactivity series Flashcards
How can metals be arranged into a reactivity series based on reactions with water and dilute acids
More Violent = more reactive
How to tell reactivity from displacement reactions
A metal will displace another metal from its oxide or salt
What is the reactivity series (in order)
Potassium
Sodium
Lithium
Calcium
Magnesium
Aluminium
Zinc
Iron
Copper
Silver
Gold
What are the conditions for iron to rust
Oxygen and Water
How can rusting be prevented
Barrier Methods: stops water and oxygen getting to iron
Grease, oil, paint, plastic
Galvanising: coating in zinc
even if barrier is broken, the zinc reacts before the iron
Sacrificial Protection: More reactive metal will react before the iron
Explain Redox ect in terms of electrons and oxygen
Oxidation = loss of electrons = gain of oxygen
Reduction = gain of electrons = loss of oxygen
Redox = involves both O and R
Oxidising agent = gives oxygen (it itself is reduced)
Reducing agent = takes oxygen (it itself is oxidised)
How does redox relate to metal displacement
Replaced in oxide
