2
Q

What is the structure of an atom

A

Nucleus = Protons and Neutrons
Shells = Electrons
Atoms are neutral as n(protons) = n(electrons)

What is an isotope

A

Atoms of the same element with a different mass number
(same protons, diff. neutrons)

Q

How to calculate relative atomic mass

A

Multiply mass of each isotope by relative abundance
Add those together
Divide by sum of relative abundances (usually 100)
e.g. Ar = ((35 x 75) + (37 x 25)) / 100
Ar = 35.5
