Reactions of acids Flashcards
What is an acid?
Compounds that when dissolved in water release H+ ions.
What are alkali’s?
Compounds that wehn dissolved in water release OH- ions.
If a solution is purple what is the ph?
Alkali and over PH 7.
If a solution is red what is the ph?
Acid and under PH 7.
What happens when a strong acid is dissolved in water?
Every molecule splits up into ions.
How are salts made?
When acids react with metals or metal compounds.
What is a salt?
A compound where the hyrdrogen from an acid has been replaced by a metal.
What is a redox reaction?
- The metal loses electrons- it is oxidised.
- Hydrogen gains an electron - it is reduced.
What do bases do?
They neutralise acids to form water in neutralisation reactions.
What does concentration tell us about how much of a substance there is in water?
- More concentrated acids have lots of acids in a small volume of water.
- Less concentrated acids have little acid in a large volume of water.
