Periodic table Flashcards
What is group 0 called?
The noble gases
What are the properties of noble gases?
- Full outer shells with eight electrons, so do not need to lose of gain electrons.
- Arent very reactive so exist as single atoms as they do not need to bond to form molecules.
- Boiling points increase down the group
What are the properties of mendeleev’s periodic table?
- Ordered by atomic mass normally
- Gaps left for undiscovered elements
- Grouped by chemical properties
- No clear distinction
- Uncomplete
What are properties of the modern periodic table?
- Ordered by atomic number
- No gaps
- Grouped by the number of electrons in the outer shells
- Metals to the left, non-metals to the right
What did the discovery of the neutron lead to?
Isotopes - Explained why some elecments didnt seem to fit when the periodic table was organised by atomic mass.
What do Group 1 elements react with?
Oxygen, Chlorine and water.
What are the group 1 elements called?
Alkali metals
Why are group 1 elements very reactive?
Because they only need to lose one electron to react.
Why does reactivity increase as you move down group 1?
- The atoms increase in size
- The outer electron is further from the nucleus meaning its easier to lose
What are the group 7 elements called?
The halogens
What is flourines state at room temperature?
Gas
What is Chlorines state at room temperature?
Gas
What is Bromine state at room temperature?
Liquid
What is Iodines state at room temperature?
Solid
Why does reactivity decrease as you move down group 7?
- The atoms increase in size
- The outer shell is further away from the nucleus
- The electrostatic attraction from the nucleus to the outer shell is weaker, so it is harder to gain the one electron to fill outer shell
