Q

What are the properties of noble gases?

A
  • Full outer shells with eight electrons, so do not need to lose of gain electrons.
  • Arent very reactive so exist as single atoms as they do not need to bond to form molecules.
  • Boiling points increase down the group

Q

What are the properties of mendeleev’s periodic table?

A
  • Ordered by atomic mass normally
  • Gaps left for undiscovered elements
  • Grouped by chemical properties
  • No clear distinction
  • Uncomplete

Q

What are properties of the modern periodic table?

A
  • Ordered by atomic number
  • No gaps
  • Grouped by the number of electrons in the outer shells
  • Metals to the left, non-metals to the right

Q

Why are group 1 elements very reactive?

A

Because they only need to lose one electron to react.

Q

Why does reactivity increase as you move down group 1?

A
  • The atoms increase in size
  • The outer electron is further from the nucleus meaning its easier to lose

Q

Why does reactivity decrease as you move down group 7?

A
  • The atoms increase in size
  • The outer shell is further away from the nucleus
  • The electrostatic attraction from the nucleus to the outer shell is weaker, so it is harder to gain the one electron to fill outer shell

Q

What is a displacement reaction?

A

More reactive group 7 elements can take the place of less reactive ones in a compound.
