Reactions Flashcards
chemical equation
communicates what’s occurring in a chemical reaction, has:
- reactant formulas
- product formulas
- reacting ratios, “molar ratio”
+
separates 2 reactants/products from each other
–>
separates reactants and products
–> with triangle
reaction heated when performed
“+heat”
when on left: reaction requires heat
when on right: reaction produces heat
“(aq)”
aqueous, or dissolved in water
law of conservation of mass
mass can not be created or destroyed
how does the law of conservation of math apply to writing chemical equations?
it means the # of atoms of each element must be equal on both sides
how to balance an equation?
- add whole # coefficients to formulas
- if an element is in more than 1 reactant/product balance them last
- if a polyatomic ion is unchanged through reaction, balance whole ion
stoichiometry
the relationship between quantities of substances in a chemical reaction
