reaction profiles Flashcards

1
Q

what normally happens during a chemical reaction?

A

1) Energy transferred from the surrounding to reactants to break the bonds between them leaving separate atoms.
2) then energy is transferred to the surroundings when new bonds form between the atoms to form products

Q

What do you need to rememeber when drawing an exothermic reaction profile?

A

That less energy is transfered to break the bonds in the reactants then when creating new bonds in the products. meaning that the energy change is negative as energy is being transfered to the surroundings instead of being taken in.

Q

What do you need to remember when drawing an endothermic reaction profile?

A

That the amount of energy transfered to break the bonds is more than when forming the new bonds between the products.
