Exothermic and endothermic reactions Flashcards
Define exothermic reactions
An exothermic reaction is the releasing of energy to the surrounding during a chemical reaction, increasing the temperatures of the surrounding.
Give examples of exothermic reactions.
Combustion
neutralistation
Define endothermic reactions.
An endothermic reaction is a reaction that takes in energy from the surroundings making the surrounding temperatures colder.
Examples of endothermic reactions
photosynthesis takes in light energy
In sherbet sweets, the reaction of citric acid and sodium hydrocarbonate making your tongue feel cold.
Define what combustion is.
a reaction between fuel and oxygen which releases heat to the surroundings.
Define what thermal decomposition is.
Thermal decomposition is the breaking down of a compound due to heat. this is also an example of an endothermic reaction.
