PH scale Flashcards
What ions are formed by acids?
Hydrogen ions (H+) in aqueous solutions.
What ions are formed by alkalines?
An alkali forms hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water.
What is a base that dissolves in water?
An alkaline
What is a base?
A substance such as metal oxides or metal hydroxides that neutralise acids and produce salt and water.
Example of acids:
Hydrochloric acid
sulfuric acid
nitric acid
Example of bases
Copper oxides
iron hydroxides
sodium hydroxides which is also an alkaline.
On the ph scale point out alkaline neutral and acidic.
everything above 7 is alkaline
7 is neutral
everything below 7 is acidic
How can you measure PH?
You can use a PH probe or a universal indicator which changes regarding the acidity or alkalinity or neutrality of the substance.
How do you use a PH probe to measure the PH scale?
1) wash the probe with water so that it is at neutral.
2) adjust the reading to match the buffer solution and calibrate a couple of times.(to get an accurate reading)
3) then wash and place it in the solution.
