Altar
A table for sacrifice.
Amen
It is say ‘I do believe.’
Benediction
A special time of prayer, adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Blessed Sacrament
The real presence of Jesus under the appearance of bread and wine.
Celebrant
The deacon, priest or bishop who leads the liturgy.
Chalice
The cup for the wine at Mass.
Communion
We receive the Body and Blood of Jesus.
Consecration
The action of the priest at Mass which, by the power of the Holy Spirit, changes the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ.
Creed
We profess our belief in the basic truths of our faith.
Eucharistic Prayer
A prayer, praising God, calling down the Holy Spirit, retelling the Last Supper story, and with the words of consecration.
Eucharist
Literally ’Thanksgiving’. It is sometimes used for the Mass, or the Body and Blood of Jesus in particular.
Genuflect
To go down on one knee in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament when you enter or leave a Catholic church.
Gloria
A song of rejoicing in the goodness of God. This is said or sung.
Gospel
An account of Jesus’ life or teaching.
Host
The piece of unleavened bread that is used in the Mass to become the Body of the Lord Jesus.
