Apocalypse
Another name for the Book of Revelation; the last book in the Bible.
Genesis
The first book of the Bible
Prophecy
The Old Testament books in which a prophet hears God’s message and is sent to the people to speak it out.
Revelation
The way that God slowly but surely showed Himself to Israel by His Word.
Sacred Scripture
Another name for the Bible.
Sacred Tradition
The teachings of the Apostles about Christ passed down to the Church through the ages.
Symbolic Story
A story that uses symbols to get across important truths.
Testament
A word meaning witness; used to describe parts of the
Bible.
Torah
The Hebrew name for the first five books in the Bible.
Wisdom Writings
These Old Testament books are about how to live wisely
and well in the sight of God and other people.
Contrition
Being sorry in your heart for having sinned against God.
Forgiveness
Healing a friendship broken by wrongdoing.
Grace
Gift of God’s life and help in a person’s soul.
Original Sin
The sinful tendency that humans inherit from Adam and
Eve’s disobedience.
Paschal Candle
The large candle lit at the Easter Vigil Mass
Penance
Something to make up for the damage done by sin; also
a name for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Repentance
Turning to God and being truly sorry.
Rite
The order and way in which a sacrament is celebrated.
Sacrament
A living sign by which we receive God’s help for our souls
in a particular way

Sacraments that bring peace and wholeness in mind and
body – Reconciliation and the Anointing of the Sick.
Apostle
One sent out to preach the Good News.
Bishop
A leader, teacher and guide for God’s People (the
Church) in a certain area called a diocese
Cathedral
The main church in a diocese
Crosier
The long staff carried by a Bishop symbolising his role as
a shepherd.
