Explain the process of electing a new pope (5 stages)
- After the pope dies the fisherman ring is broken ( new one is made )
- 9 days of mourning then a week after the college of cardinals meet. This is called a conclave.
- Must be at least 2/3 plus 1 votes for a new pope to be elected
- 2 ballots taken each morning and each afternoon
- When a pope is elected, white smoke comes out of the chimney. The dean of the college of cardinals says at st peter’s square: Habemaus Papam( We have a new Pope )
