Raw Materials And Stock Forms Flashcards

1
Q

What are Raw Materials

A

Raw materials are unprocessed materials used to produce a variety of products. In spite of this, the materials or components must be in stock for businesses to purchase and have shipped to their company.

Q

What Happens to Raw Materials

A

Raw materials are converted into stock forms, which are then used by manufacturers all over the world

Q

Why is it Important for comapnies to make/use appropriate Stock

A

Materials are supplied in lots of common shapes and sizes. It is important to be aware of these when designing and planning projects and selecting the most appropriate material for use. The use of appropriate stock form will keep down costs and avoid the need for additional machining or processing before use. Standard forms and sizes are cheaper than special sizes because they are processed in large quantities.

What Stock Forms does Wood come in and how

A

Planks of wood are sold in standard widths, lengths, diameter and thicknesses. Rough sawn wood is used for hidden building work as it hasn’t been planes smooth. Planed Square Edge (PSE) is timber which has been sent through a planer/thicknesser to create a smooth standard in thickness.

Manufactured board has the advantage of being avaliable in much bigger sheets than planks of wood. They are usually 2440mm x 1220mm sheets in a variety of thicknesses.

Q

What are Standard/Stock Components and what do they include (+ examples)

A

Standard components include hinges, screws, bolts, handles and KD fittings. KD (Knock Down) fittings allow wood or board to be joined together quickly and accurately, particularly used in flat pack furniture. They are also designed to be put together but also can be dissassembled again fairly easily.

Examples are blocks, dowels, scan fittings and CAM locks.

Q

What Stock Forms does Metal come in and how

A

Metal is avaliable in sheet or tubular form, usually in standard thickness, length, kr diameter. It is difficult and expensive to reform metal so ordering the right sized tube, angle, bar, or rod is a good starting point for production.

(Standard components which can be used to join metal are nuts, bolts, rivets, and screws)

Q

What is a rivet and how does it work

A

A rivet joins two pieces of metal together, and is designed to be a permanently join. Rivets have various designs of head at one end and are used to fasten materials together by being passed through a punched or drilled hole and hammered over (usually) to form a head on the reverse side.

Q

What Stock Forms does Metal come in and how

A

Like metal and timber, polymers come in a range of sizes, rod sheets, and tubes. It can also be blown into foam and heated and rolled into film. Granules can be melted and moulded easily into stock shapes.

Standard components used with plastics are screws, nuts, bolts, rivets, and adhesives.

Q

How are (Plastic) Stock Form Sheets used (+Standard sizes and example uses)

A

Standard sheets of acrylic are usually 1200 x 500mm or 1200 x 600mm and are most commonly 3mm in thickness.

Other thicknesses are avaliable, but the choice of colour becomes more limited in the less common sizes.

High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) can also be aupplied in large sheets but is usually then processed down into smaller sizes (usually thinner than 3mm) for use in vacuum formers.

Q

How are (Plastic) Stock Form Powders used (+Example)

A

Used in fluidising tanks to plastic coat small metal parts

Thermoset polymerd are also generally found in powder form, but due to the compression moulding manufacturing process, it is unlikely that you will come across them in a school environment.

Q

How are (Plastic) Stock Form Foams used (+Examples)

A

These vary in thickness and material depending on the intended application.

Plastazote foam is a tademark although the material itself is polyethylene foam. It is avaliable in a variety of thicknesses and densities. It is often used in protective packaging, swimming pool floats, and safety mattings in gyms and nureseries.
