What is a Hazard?
A hazard is something that has the potential to to harm you.
The HSE define a hazard as something with the potential to cause harm, including ill health and injury, to persons or to cause damage to property, equipment, e.t.c
What is the HSE?
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is Britain’s national regulator for workplace health and safety.
What is a Risk?
The HSE define a risk as the likelihood of a hazard causing a harm in practice
How could a someone working as a grinder minimise the risks posed to them
● Face shield - flying debris
● Face mask - protect from small particles
● Ear defenders due to loud noise
● Protective clothing (non flammable)
● Protective gloves - flying debris
● Knee pads - minimise discomfort and damage
● Metal placed on crate to lift higher and avoid contact with the floor when grinding
● Operative would have received training
What does the red circular sign with a red cross through the middle of it mean
These are prohibition safety signs, either circular with a cross through the middle, or a black symbol behind a red circle with a red band through it. Used to state what actions are prohibited.
What does the sign with a blue circle mean
A blue circle with a white symbol in the middle, these signs state rules that must be obeyed, such as “safety harness must be worn”.
What does a sign with a yellow triangle and black outline (something with a black symbol in the middle) mean
A yellow triangle with a black symbol and text or a standalone black symbol in the middle, these signs are used to warn of potential danger.
What does a sign with a green square (sometimes with a white symbol) mean
A green square with a white symbol or white symbol and text in the middle is a safety sign, used to verify that certain actions are safe or to point people in the direction of a safe area.
What is COSHH
COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) is the law that makes it essential for employers to control exposure to hazardous substances that are detrimental to employee health.
How can employers can prevent or reduce their workers’ exposure to hazardous substances
● Finding out what the health hazards are
● Deciding how to prevent harm to health with a risk assessment
● Providing control measures to reduce harm to health
● Making sure they are used
● Keeping all control measures in good working order
● Providing information, instruction and training for employees and others
● Providing monitoring and health surveillance in appropriate cases
● Planning for emergencies
What is the Kitemark?
The Kitemark is a UK product and service quality trade mark which is owned and operated by the British Standards Institution (BSI Group).
What is the Lion Mark
The Lion Mark is a British consumer symbol developed in 1988 by British Toy & Hobby Association (BTHA) and used to identify toys denoted as safe and of high quality.
What is the UKCA or CE mark
UKCA marking will replace CE marking for products placed in Great Britain. CE required in Europe.
UKCA Mark (UK Conformity Assessment) is the new marking that will be required for fasteners placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland).
UKCA mark is not recognised in the EU market and the product placed there will still require CE Marking to be sold.
