Rates Of Reaction UNIT 2 Flashcards
3 things that increase rate of reaction
Temp, conc, catalyst
A reaction won’t take place between 2 particles unless….
They collide with in the right direction. They need to be facing each other the right way. They must collide with at least a certain minimum amount of kinetic energy . This is called collision theory. The minimum amount of kinetic energy needed is called the activation energy. The particles need this much energy to break the bonds to Start the reaction. Reactions with low activation energies happen easily, compared to reactions with high activation energies. You need to give the particles extra energy by heating them
What happens to the reaction rate if you increase the temp
The particles will have more kinetic energy so will move faster. So a greater proportion of molecules will have at least the activation energy and be able to react. Also, As they are moving faster they collide more often
What happens to the reaction rate when you increase the concentration
The particles will be closer together which means they will collide more often. If there are more collisions they’ll have more chances to react. If the reaction involves a gas, increasing the pressure would have the same effect
How does a catalyst work
It provides an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy
Catalysts lower the activation energy, meaning….
There’s more particles with enough energy to react when they collide. It does this by allowing the reaction to go via a different route. So in a certain amount of time, more particles react
What does a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution show
The number of molecules in a gas with different kinetic energies
