Rate of reactions - collision theory Flashcards
1
Q
Collision theory
A
States that substances can only react with each other if the particles collide with one another.
2
Q
Successful collisions can only occur in the following conditions:
A
- sufficient energy (energy equal or greater to the activation energy)
- at the correct orientation
3
Q
Activation energy
A
The minimum energy required for particles to be able to successfully collide
4
Q
Collision geometry
A
Collision geometry refers to the position of the reactants when they collide.
For example in the propene reaction with bromine.
Direct collision with the carbon to carbon double bond is more favourable and would be more likely to result in a reaction.
