Q
Properties of alkanes
A
- Non-Polar- Alkanes are hydrocarbons. Carbon and hydrogen have very similar electronegativities making alkanes non-polar
-Insoluble in water- As water molecules form hydrogen bonds with each other. Alkanes cant form hydrogen bonds because they have no permanent dipole Therefore can not dissolve in water.
- Generally unreactive
- London forces
- More surface point of contacts = increase london forces
- Branched alkenes have lower boiling points as it prevents alkenes getting closer together so london forces are reduced
