Seneca Falls Convention
Planned by Lucretia Mott. Early and influential women’s rights convention held in Seneca Falls, New York. It spanned two days: 19 July 1848 and 20 July 1848. Presented Declaration of Sentiments.
Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Both were involved in temperance and abolition movements, believed women showed be involved in men’s meetings. Presented the Dec. of Sentiments.
Political Machine
political organization in which an authoritative boss or small group commands the support of a corps of supporters and businesses (usually campaign workers), who receive rewards for their efforts. The machine’s power is based on the ability of the workers to get out the vote for their candidates on election day.
American Federation of Labor
First federation of labor unions in the United States. It was founded in Columbus, Ohio, in May 1886 by an alliance of craft unions (skilled workers) disaffected from the Knights of Labor. Samuel Gompers was the president.
Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine was a policy of the United States introduced on December 2, 1823. It stated that further efforts by European nations to colonize land or interfere with states in North or South America would be viewed as acts of aggression, requiring U.S. intervention. In turn, the US would not interfere with European countries
Palmer Raids
The series of raids in the early 1920’s against suspected radicals and communists, police arrested 1000’s of people (some immigrants, some radicals)
Espionage Act
act passed by Congress in 1917 enacting severe penalties for anyone engaged in disloyal or treasonable activites
In 1919, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled through Schenck v. United States that the act (of handing out leaflets to draft-age men urging resistance) did not violate the freedom of speech of those convicted under its provisions. The constitutionality of the law, its relationship to free speech, and the meaning of its language have been contested in court ever since
Sedition Act
An Act of the United States Congress that extended the Espionage Act of 1917 to cover a broader range of offenses, notably speech and the expression of opinion that cast the government or the war effort in a negative light or interfered with the sale of government bonds

Hoovervilles
shanty towns built by homeless people during the Great Depression.
Causes of Great Depression:
1) stocks lowering exponentially
2) people wanting money back-banks not having enough
3) new farming-dust bowl
4) not enough work, many moved to CA
DURING: many people lived in poverty, were homeless and jobless, children ran away, all aspects of society were affected
Causes of economic prosperity in the 20’s:
1) after WW1, constant flow of money
2) mass production/new techniques
3) raising stock prices
4) new trends in popular culture
Causes of American involvement in WW1
1) involvement of Belgium
2) Germany using submarines to attack British ships (Lusitania)
