Radiation protection Flashcards
Main principle
ALARA
exposure as low as possible,
minimum number of exposures.
Well planned and well executed scans,
Keep the Power and the Time of exposure as low as possible
Use Dose limits.
Cumulative dose limits for all the different practices should be set in place
15 mSV for the eye lens
50 mSv for the skin
Other methods of radiation protection
Use non-ionizing radiation whenever possible
Use endoscopy, other imaging methods
Use protective lead sheilding on all non-exposed areas.
Protection for the radiation workers
Maximize distance of the worker from both the beam, and patient who scatters X- rays.
The inverse square law. Doubling the distance between the patient and the worker drops the workers dose by 75%
Dose = K/rsquared
