Radiation Injury Flashcards
ionizing radiation long term effect
fibrosis >6 weeks
and vascular damage- surgeons won’t do surgery because wounds won’t do as well
long term effects on organ
squamous cell carcinoma
osteosarcoma, angiosarcoma
body systems in rank from most vulnerable to least from radiation
hematopoietic system (bone marrow, spleen, ln)
GI system
CNS
Acute radiation syndromes
molecular death (>100,000 Rad) CNS syndrome (>2000 RAD) GI syndrome (500-2000) Hematopoietic syndrome (50-500) Prodromal syndrome with possible late effects (years later) (<50)
Hematopoietic syndrome
50-500 RAD
nausea, vomiting diarrhea, resolves in 1-2 days
bone marrow transplant is tx
late effects- observe for development of post radiation cancers
GI syndrome
death results in few days from circulatory collapse
no tx except for those with lower radiation doses that might benefit from bone marrow transplant
NVD
What syndrome can be treated?
hematopoietic- hla typing, bmt
radioactive fallout
coarse particles caught in explosion fall out near site of blast
