broad spectrum treatment

A

ampicillin + (gentamycin or cefotaxime)

avoid ceftriaxone in kids <28 days because of lack of liver function

vancomycin for staph infxn
acyclovir for suspected herpes infxns

standard management

A
  • fluid resuscitation 20 ml/kg IV fluids to total 60-100 ml/kg
  • culture prior to antibiotics because sterilization of csf can occur as quickly as 15 minutes post starting abx
  • broad spectrum abx
