UTI, bacteremia, meningitis, osteo, pneumonia, gastroenteritis, cellulitis, septic arthritis
kids may present looking like viral syndrome but still have SBI

A
infants less than 1 year, HR should increase 10 beats for every 1 degree C

broad spectrum treatment
A
ampicillin + (gentamycin or cefotaxime)
avoid ceftriaxone in kids <28 days because of lack of liver function
vancomycin for staph infxn
acyclovir for suspected herpes infxns

standard management
A
- fluid resuscitation 20 ml/kg IV fluids to total 60-100 ml/kg
- culture prior to antibiotics because sterilization of csf can occur as quickly as 15 minutes post starting abx
- broad spectrum abx
