Q

Name four sources of Non-Ionizing Radiation?

A

Sources of Non-Ionizing Radiation include;

  • Transmitting antenna farms
  • Radar installations
  • Electronic equipment using high voltage
  • Electricity pylons
  • Microwave ovens
  • Lasers (higher level).

Q

Name three effects of Non-Ionizing Radiation?

A

Effects of Non-Ionizing Radiation;

  • Redness and burns to the skin
  • Heating and damage to internal body organs
  • Temporary or permanent eye damage
  • Increased risk of skin cancer
  • Two areas of the body, the eyes and the testes, are particularly vulnerable to RF heating. This is because of the relative lack of available blood flow to dissipate the excessive heat load.

The effects are mainly non-cumulative.

Q

State three effects from Ionizing Radiation?

A

Effects of ionizing Radiation;

  • Sickness and Diarrhoea
  • Anaemia due to red blood cell damage
  • A reduced immune system due to white blood cell damage
  • Cancer
  • Genetic mutations

The effects are cumulative

Q

State the three Radiation Control Areas?

A

Radiation Hazard Control Areas

  • RF Safe Area: No hazard deemed to exist.
  • RF Restricted Area: Restricted to authorised personnel only.
  • RF Danger Area: No access.
