Hazardous Substances Flashcards
What is the definition of a Hazardous Substance?
A hazardous substance can be any substance, whether solid, liquid or gas, that may cause harm to your health.
What does COSHH stand for?
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
What is the purpose of the COSHH Regulations?
Provide a framework to help protect people in the workplace against health risks from hazardous substances.
The substances may be used directly in the workplace (e.g. cleaning chemicals) or may arise from the work (e.g. dusts, fumes and waste products).
What are the Employers responsibilities under the COSHH regulations?
Managers should ensure that end users have access to all of the relevant information about the materials, exposure routes, the potential health effects and the types of control to be implemented (these should be incorporated into process/user instructions) of hazardous substances used.
What are the Line Managers responsibilities under the COSHH regulations?
Line Managers are required to assess the risks to health arising from hazardous substances used in or created by workplace activities and that control measures are used and maintained properly and that safety procedures are followed. They are to ensure that no work is carried out which could expose employees to hazardous substances without first considering the risks and necessary precautions.
The European Regulation mandated that all substances adopted the Globally Harmonised System, what is this regulation known as?
It is known by its abbreviated form, ‘the CLP Regulation’ or just plain ‘CLP’.
State six hazard categories within these regulations?
- Dangers to the environment,
- Toxic,
- Gas under pressure,
- Corrosive,
- Explosive
- Flammable
- Caution - used for less serious health hazards like skin irritation,
- Oxidising,
- Longer-term health hazards such as carcinogenicity.
What are the methods of exposure to hazardous substances?
Inhalation - By breathing fume, dust, gas or mist.
Absorption - By skin contact.
Injection - By injection into the skin.
Ingestion - By swallowing.
Name three methods of controlling the risks from hazardous substances?
Elimination of the hazard
Substitution of the hazard (alternative substances or procedures)
Hazard control (e.g. physical protective measures, engineering control),
Provision of safety procedures or safe systems of work,
Provision of personal and/or respiratory protective equipment.
REACH mandate that all substances are required to have which documentation?
Safety Data Sheets are a requirement by REACH.
How should Hazardous Substances be disposed of?
Dispose of in accordance with SDS and station orders.
Double bag using clear bags.
Complete disposal certificate and attached SDS.
Place forms between clear bags.
Retain a copy for record and hand a copy to waste disposal.
What form number is the MOD COSHH Assessment?
MOD Form 5011.
Which overarching Joint Service Publication would you find information on Hazardous Substances?
JSP 375 Part 2 Vol 1, Chp 11 Hazardous Substances contains all information relevant to managing COSHH requirements.
what are the Employees responsibilities with regards to Hazardous Substances?
Use the control measures put in place by Line Managers.
Store and utilise the PPE effectively.
Practice a high standard of Personal Hygiene.
Report all defects, errors, problems and inadequate controls promptly.
