Radiated and absorbed energy Flashcards
What is the relationship between the temperature of an object and the amount of power it radiates?
The hotter the object, the more power it radiates
Why does a dull black surface lose energy faster than a shiny one?
A dull black surface is a good radiator of heat and a shiny one isnt
When the rate of absorption is greater than the rate of radiation, what will happen to the temperature?
It will rise
What is the thermal equillibrium?
It is when the rate of radiation is equal to the rate of absorption and the temperature will remain steady
How do you investigate the different rates of heat radiation?
you can compare the temperature over time of a silvered beaker and a blackened one
How do you investigate the different rates of heat absorption?
you can use a radiant heater between two plates, one silvered and one blackened, then time how long it takes each plate to get hot enough to melt wax
