Energy resources Flashcards
What are the advantages of coal?
It is cheap, has a quick start up time and will last at least 200 years
What are the disadvantages of coal?
Burning coal releases Co2 and SO2, mining can be dangerous and stockpiles are needed to meet demand
What are the advantages of natural gas?
power stations are efficient and have the quickest start up time, flexible at meeting demand, doesn’t produce SO2, will last another 50 years
What are the disadvantages of natural gas?
Burning releases CO2, pipelines are needed for transportation and they’re expensive
What are the advantages of oil?
Power stations have a quick start up time and there is enough to last 50 years
What are the disadvantages of oil?
Burning releases CO2 and SO2, prices are variable and there is a danger of spillage and pollution
What are the advantages of Nuclear?
They are located away from population centres and do not produce SO2 or CO2
What are the disadvantages of nuclear?
Building the power stations are expensive and the start up time is the longest. Radioactive waste remains dangerous for thousands of years
How does solar power produce energy?
Using light energy from the sun
How does wind power produce energy?
Using wind to rotate huge propeller blades on a turbine
How does wave power produce energy?
Using large floats containing coils and magnets that move up and down with ocean waves
How does hydroelectric power produce energy?
Using fast-flowing water that is stored in a resevoir
How does tidal power produce energy?
Uses seawater from incoming and outgoing tides
How does biomass produce energy?
It is an organic material from decaying plant or animal waste that can be used as a fuel
What are the advantages and disadvantages with solar?
A- useful in remote areas and single homes can have own energy
DA - no power at night or when cloudy
