Light Flashcards
What can be used to disperse visible light into its component colours?
Glass prism
What device is used to look at the spectrum of light?
A spectrometer
What can be used to make a simple model of a spectrometer?
A cardboard box and an old disk
How can a clearer image be seen?
A narrower slit and a darkened room
What type of light do hot stars emit?
Blue light
What type of light do cooler stars emit?
Red light
Why can visible light be seen using a telescope?
Because it isnt well absorbed by the atmosphere
How do scientists examine the chemical composition of stars?
By looking at the light they emit using a spectrometer.
Why are radio waves used for communication?
Because they are not absorbed AT ALL by the atmosphere.
What do gamma and x-rays both have in common?
They are both almost all absorbed by the atmosphere
What is the doppler effect?
It is when waves are squashed when coming towards you and then stretched when moving away from you.
When a star is moving towards you, what shift does it have?
Blue-shift
When a star is moving away from you, what shift does it have?
Red-shift
