Radar Transmission Flashcards
What is Multi-Radar Processing?
Processing radar information from multiple sites to give the best coverage
What items are depicted on video map? (Radar display)
- SIGNIFICANT POINTS - nav. aids, holding points, etc.
- FINAL APPROACH TRACKS with ranges
- AIRSPACE RESTRICTIONS
- CONTROLLED AIRSPACE BOUNDARIES
- COASTLINES & RIVERS
- FIR &NATIONAL BOUNDARIES
- LATITUDE & LONGITUDE
What moveable data is there on a Video Map?
- DF BEARING LINES (direction finding equipment)
- ELECTRONIC RANGE & BEARING MARKER - ERBM
- ELECTRONIC CURSOR
- SYMBOLS
- ALPHA NUMERICS
Note: Rolling Ball / Joystick controlled
What are Radar Sort Boxes?
Airspace is divided into a grid of squares 16nm by 16nm forming columns of air from the ground upwards. (“Grid square”)
What are the two methods of removing unwanted returns?
Moving Target Indicator.
Circular Polarisation
What is Circular polarisation?
Circular polarisation of electromagnetic waves
can be utilised by the RADAR to overcome the
effect of Weather clutter. The EMF is reflected
and is reversed by reflection from aspherical
object (e.g. raindrop).
CP only switched on when
required as it can mask some
returns.
Receiver can be “gated” to ignore such returns
and allow a/c to be see
What is MTI?
Moving Target Indicator (MTI)
A system to display echoes from moving
targets (i.e. aircraft) and to reject echoes from
fixed targets (i.e. permanent echoes).
M.T.I. removes ground clutter from the radar
display.
What is Tangental Fade? (PSR)
If an aircraft is moving tangentially (90
degrees) to the radar beam the aircraft movement will not have a radial component.
What medium do we use for transmission for radar data? (4)
- Telephone
- Fibre optic cable
- Coaxial cable
- Radio link
