Automation And AFTN Flashcards
What is AFTN?
Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunications Network
“A worldwide system of aeronautical fixed
circuits provided as part of the aeronautical
fixed service for the exchange of messages
and/or digital data between stations having the
same or compatible communications
equipment”
How do we address each AFTN station?
Each has a unique address, 8 letters.
4 letter ICAO identifier and 4 letter position qualifier
EGLLZTZX - Heathrow Tower
What is MOTNE?
Meteorological Operation Telecommunication Network Europe
What is OLDI?
On-Line Data Interchange
What is OLDI Use for?
Transmission of aeronautical data for control and coordination
What should be the reliability of OLDI?
99.86%
What are the benefits of OLDI? (4)
- Automation of routine actions (information exchange) which allows the controllers to focus on more complex tasks. (e.g., conflict detection and resolution)
- Reduced controller workload due to reduced need for verbal coordination.
- Better situational awareness
- Indirect improvement of ATS system safety features. (e.g., MTCD)
What other networks are used in ATC?
Overseas Fixed Telecommunications Service (OFTS)
Société International Telecommunications Association (SITA)
