Radar Flashcards
What does PSR stand for
PRIMARY SURVEILLANCE RADAR
Is any additional equipment required for using PSR
NO
No equipment in aircraft required
Aircraft skin reflects the radar signal back to radar head
What does SSR stand for
SECONDARY SURVEILLANCE RADAR
Is any additional equipment required for using SSR
YES
Aircraft requires a transponder to be installed
Transponder detects it is being “hit” and transmits a UHF signal from the aircraft
What frequency band does a transponder trasmit in
UHF
What are the 3 Transponder operating modes
- A (Alpha)
- A+C (Charlie) [Altitude]
- A+C+S (Sierra)
What is transmitted in Transponder mode A
CODE
as set by pilot
Octal 0 - 7
What is transmitted in Transponder mode C
Includes mode A and;
ALTITUDE
Sensed by internal altimeter which is set to 1013 hPa
What is transmitted in Transponder mode S
Includes mode A and C and;
HEX CODE
Hex code translates aircraft callsign
Multiple additional information to enhance situational awareness
What are the 4 mode selections for a transponder
- OFF
- SBY
- ON
- ALT
- OFF - Unit off
- SBY - Standby, warming up
- ON - On, transmits the code
- ALT - On, transmits the code and altitude as a flight level
What do the following transponder codes mean
2000 (mode A)
2000
7000
7004
7500
7600
7700
0030
2000 (mode A) - Aerodrom surface, under tow priro to selecting SBY or OFF
2000 - IFR Conspicuity code
7000 - VFR Conspicuity code
7004 - Aerobatic Conspicuity code
7500 - Illegal interference
7600 - Communications (Radio) failure
7700 - Distress
0030 - Lost
If lost, what procedure should you follow in terms of what to set on the transponder, and who to contact on what frequency
- 0030
- 121.500 MHz
- London Center
What are the 2 button types of transponder
- Press button
- Dial
If using a dial type transponder, what must a pilot do before chaning the code
SET TO SBY
Set to SBY, chane code, set back to ALT
A function that all transponders have, that should only be used when instructed by ATC
