Race 5 Flashcards
What was the first European nation to abolish slavery and when did they? When did the US?
Great Britain in 1833. US 1865, 13th Amendment
What were some of the theories used to justify slavery in the 1800s?
Some applied the contention that some “types of mankind” were created separate and unequal. Others argued that blacks degenerated from the original race of white Adamites and that the deviation was irreversible. And some stuck with the curse of Ham. (Fredrickson 2002)
How was white supremacy used in post-Reconstruction as a class weapon?
It was stressed whenever disadvantaged whites unfurled the banner of class grievance and challenged the elite of planters and businessman who controlled the party machinery and the state and local governments that served their interests. (Fredrickson 2002)
What is racial Darwinism and when did it begin?
It provides an explanation of how new species could emerge over a vastly extended period of time and become differentiated in their capacities. It states that human races were in competition and inferior breeds would not survive in the struggle for existence. It justified eugenics - justified policies like anti-miscegenation. (Fredrickson 2002)
What does it take for racism to be modernized?
It must be bureaucratized and “rationalized” in the Weberian sense, it must be legalized.
