Q

Define, for each group, whether they follow a pattern of multiple-race identification, hypodescent, or hyperdescent: part-black, part American Indian, part-Asian. Also, why are there differences?

A

part-black - hypodescent, part American Indian - hyperdescent, part-Asian - multiple-race identification. They reflect different histories of radicalization for people of Asian, African, European, and Native American origin (there is a legacy of hyperdescent). (Gullickson 2011)

Q

What are some the possible reasons for part-Asian individuals to claim a multiracial identity?

A

1) Asian-origin population growth has taken place largely after the period in which strict racial-categorization norms were most likely to be formed. 2) The generational recency of the Asian-American population may mean that a process of immigrant incorporation and/or assimilation is at work. 3) Part-Asian respondents are more likely than others to be the biracial children of single-race parents as opposed to the descendants of interracial unions further back in the family tree. (Gullickson 2011)
