Race 13 Flashcards
What was the Immigration Act of 1924
The law limited the number of immigrants from any country to 2 percent of the number of people from that country already living int he US in 1890. In 1929 they changed it from 1890 to 1920.
What was the Amendments to the Immigration and Nationality Act and when did it happen? What did it cause?
It eliminated the quota system, instead had cap of 170,000, but many more arrived than that. It occurred in 1965 and led to a surge of immigration from Asia.
What are the two contradictory immigrant settlement patterns?
Concentration - a few states and metro areas receive a disproportionate number of newcomers; Diffusion - immigrants are found in every state, and because immigrant types vary significantly in their locational decisions. (Iceland 2009)
What happened to the dissimilarity scores for those metro areas that had the largest percentage increases in their black populations from 1980 to 2000? And what does this suggest?
They decreased, this suggests that hyper segregation between blacks and whites that characterized the industrial Northeast & Midwest, are not being reproduced in high-growth areas in the South & West. (Iceland 2011).
