What are the characteristics of rabies
A
- 100% fatal because there is no available treatment
- 100% preventable due to post-exposure vaccine
- Dogs are reservoirs of human rabies virus

A
*Bites, stretches, and licks from infected animals. Rabies is present in the saliva of infected dogs

Rabies pathogenesis
A
The virus enters via an animal bite and replicates in muscles and skin
- Virus infects the PNS
- Rabies replicates in the dorsal root ganglia and travels up the spine to the brain and infects the brain
- Virus travels from the brain to other tissues eg kidney

List the 2 types of rabies presentation
A
- Furious rabies
* The disease progress rapidly and presents as confusion, anxiety, and agitation. Then progresses with hallucination and the patient behaves abnormally before death and coma - The dumb or paralytic rabies
* Clinically similar to poliomyelitis > paralysis > coma > death
