A

*Bites, stretches, and licks from infected animals. Rabies is present in the saliva of infected dogs

Rabies pathogenesis

A

The virus enters via an animal bite and replicates in muscles and skin

  1. Virus infects the PNS
  2. Rabies replicates in the dorsal root ganglia and travels up the spine to the brain and infects the brain
  3. Virus travels from the brain to other tissues eg kidney

List the 2 types of rabies presentation

A
  1. Furious rabies
    * The disease progress rapidly and presents as confusion, anxiety, and agitation. Then progresses with hallucination and the patient behaves abnormally before death and coma
  2. The dumb or paralytic rabies
    * Clinically similar to poliomyelitis > paralysis > coma > death
