Ambiguity
When a word has more than one meaning & it’s unspecified which meaning is required.
Vagueness
When a word is imprecise with extent.
Extensional Definitions
A term that is applicable to a certain list.
Intensional Definitions
A list of properties to fulfil in order to be defined as such.
Enumerative Definitions (extensional)
Names the members individually.
Definitions by Sub-Class (extensional)
Names the members in groups, as types of things.
Lexical Defintiions (intensional)
Reports the conventional definition, as it would appear in the dictionary.
Stipulative Definitions (intensional)
Specifies the intension independently of convention with a new term.
Precising Definitions (intensional)
Seeks to reduce vagueness of a terms conventional meaning.
Theoretical Definitions (intensional)
Seeks to improve on a conventional meaning via a theory.
Evaluating Arguments - Equivocation
moves between 2 or more different meanings/interpretations of one word.
Evaluating Arguments - Verbal Dispute
A disagreement about the meaning given to a word, not a disagreement regarding facts.
Evaluating Arguments - Persuasive Definition
The force of the argument depends on a word being defined in a way that generates a desired outcome.
