Qwest Review 9/2/15 Flashcards
What is cohesion?
When hydrogen bonds hold together the substance. Clinging of same substance to each other. Like to like. Example: Water drop on desk that remains as a droplet instead of spreading out. Also, hydrogen bonding keeps water molecules close to each other, giving water cohesion.
What is adhesion?
Clinging of one substance to another. Like to unlike. Example: water droplets clinging to grass or pine needles.
What is surface tension?
Surface tension is a measure of how difficult it is to stretch or beak the surface of a liquid. Hydrogen bonding is responsible for water’s surface tension.
What is moderation of temperature?
Water moderates air temperature by absorbing heat from air that is warmer and releasing the stored heat to air that is cooler. It occurs when water absorbs heat from air. Water has a high specific temperature, so it takes in energy and a while later the water will finally change.
How does the biological hierarchy go? Name smallest to biggest
1) molecules. 2) organelles. 3) cells. 4) tissues. 5) organs & organ systems. 6) organizations. 7) populations. 8) communities. 10) ecosystems. 11) the biosphere
What is insulation of bodies water?
When water is in the solid form, it is less dense than when it is in the liquid form. So ice floats on water. If ice sank, then eventually all ponds, lakes, and oceans would freeze making life impossible on earth. On a lake, if the top of it is frozen over, the ice acts as insulation so the water below it won’t freeze and it holds its temperature.
What is a universal solvent?
Water is a universal solvent. Water is a very versatile solvent, a quality we can trace to the polarity of the water molecule. A compound doesn’t need to be ionic to be dissolved into water. Polar compounds and nonionic polar molecules can dissolved in water too.
What is pH?
pH is a measure of the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution. Study the equations for transferring between pH and H
For Mrs. Round, H+ equals what?
H+ = protons
What are H+?
Hydrogen ions
What are OH-?
Hydroxide ions
What do acids do?
Acids donate H+ in aq solutions
What do bases do?
Bases accept H+ in aq solutions or donate OH-
What are the different types of bonding?
Ionic, covalent, and hydrogen bonding
What is ionic bonding?
An ionic bond is the attraction between two oppositely charged ions, such as Na+ and Cl-.
What is covalent bonding?
Covalent bonds form when pairs of electrons are shared.
What is electro negativity?
Electron negativity is the attraction of an atom for the electrons of a covalent bond.
What is a polar molecule?
Not sure
How can you distinguish an element from a compound?
An element is a substance made of the same type of atoms while a compound is made of different elements in definite proportions.
How can you distinguish a solution from a heterogenous mixture?
In a solution, you can’t see the particles with your eye. With a heterogeneous mixture, you can see the particles.
How to tell the number of protons, electrons, and neutrons in an isotope?
Well first remember electrons equal protons in number. So if the number on top of isotope so…
Do pH to OH conversions
Okay
Name a weak bond and describe it
The van der waals bond. It is weak and occur only when atoms and molecules are very close together. But if there are a lot of them, it can be strong. (All bonds form between molecules and also between parts of a large molecule such as a protein.) The cumulative effect of weak bonds is to reinforce the three dimensional shape of the molecule.
