Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is the biological organization? (How does it go?)
Biosphere> ecosystem> community> population> organism> organ system> organ> tissue> cell> organelle> molecule> molecule> atom. With each step up, new properties emerge as a result of interactions among components at lower levels
Eukaryote
A type of cell with a membrane-enclosed nucleus and membrane-enclosed organelles. Organisms with eukaryotic cells (protists, plants, fungi, and animals) are called eukaryotes.
Prokaryote
A type of cell lacking a membrane-enclosed nucleus and membrane-enclosed organelles. Organisms with prokaryotic cells (bacteria and archaea) are called prokaryotes.
What are the three domains?
Bacteria and archaea (which consist of prokaryotes)
Eukarya (the eukaryotes, includes various groups of protists, as well as plants, fungi, and animals
