Quiz: Taxonomy, Classification, Dichotomous Keys Flashcards
What is taxonomy?
classification (categorizing organizing into groups) and nomenclature (naming)
What is the Linnaean hierarchy?
a classification system of all living organisms
What is the order of the Linnaean hierarchy?
Domain, Kingdon, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species
Binomial Nomenclature
the genus and species, only the genus is capitalized
What is the kingdom based on?
number of cells (unicellular or multicellular), how it obtains energy (autotroph or heterotroph), and type of cell (eukaryote or prokaryote)
What are the three domains?
eukarya, bacteria, archaea
What are the six kingdoms?
animalia, plantae, fungi, protista, archaebacteria, and eubacteria
What is a dichotomous key?
helps ID unknown organisms with two features
Archaea
unicellular, come autotrophic, most chemotrophic, prokaryote, ex. “extremophiles”
Eubacteria
unicellular, autotrophic and heterotrophic, prokaryote, ex. bacteria
Fungae
most multicellular, heterotrophic, eukaryote, ex. mushrooms, yeast
Plantae
multicellular, autotrophic, eukaryote, ex. trees and grass
Animalia
multicellular, heterotrophic, eukaryote, ex. humans, insects, and worms
Protista
most unicellular, heterotrophic or autotrophic, eukaryote, ex. amoeba, paramecium, and algae
