What is ethology?
the study of animal behavior
What is the adaptive significance of the behavior?
behaviors that will place them or keep them in favorable environments = survival, habitat, food, mates
What are the two categories of behavior?
learned and innate (inherited)
Pillbug environment/preferences:
prefer dark, moist environments, can be found under stones, logs, or leaves, and feed on decaying plant material
What is orientation?
organisms body position in relation to external stimulus
What does it mean when an animals orientation is categorized as taxis?
animals move directly towards or away from a stimulus
What does it mean when an animal’s orientation is categorized as kinesis?
animals move randomly in response to environmental stimuli
What is agonistic?
organisms perceives it is being threatened and reacts by threatening, attacking, or withdrawing
