Evolution Flashcards
What is evolution?
change in frequency of traits in a population over time and organisms came from pre-existing organisms
What is Lamarck’s Theory of Acquired Characteristics?
he thought that you would gain or lose features if you overused or didn’t use them
What was Charles Lyell known for?
from his observations, he is given credit for the general acceptance that all features of the Earth’s surface are gradually affected by chemical, physical, and biological processes
Main points of “The Origin of Species” by Darwin:
- Species produce more offspring than can survive
- Individuals compete for resources or mates
- Those with the best traits produce the most
offspring (which will also have those traits)
What is Natural Selection?
- Variation
- Inheritance
- Differential Survival
- Adaptation
Evidence for Evolution:
- Fossils
- Homologous structures
- Vestigial organs
- DNA
- Embryos
- Direct Observation
What is speciation?
the formation of a new species
What is a species?
group that can interbreed, produce fertile offspring
What is adaptive radiation?
one species becomes many species
What does a phylogenetic tree show?
shows how species are related
