quiz laboratorio 1 Flashcards
scient. met. step 1
state the problem
scient met. step 2
research the prob. what will it take to solve my problem. What do I know, what do I need to know to solve my pr0blem.
scient. met. step 3
FORM A HYPOTHESIS: a possible solution to my problem. the simplest solution is often the best solution.
scient. met. step 4
test the hypothesis. perform an experiment to see if the hypothesis works.
scient. met. step 5
Draw conclusion from the data. Data are results from an experiment. Two possible conclusions: conclusion1: hypothesis correct. conclusion2: hypothesis incorrect, hypothesis failed. do more research.
continue process until problem solved.
This unit will help you become familiar with:
This unit will also help you learn to:
-safety procedures, rules, and regulations necessary to protect you and others in the laboratory.
- safely use common laboratory equipment.
objectives of the lab
- Identify hazardous materials.
- Safely and properly, use laboratory chemicals, glassware, materials, and equipment.
- Locate and use the emergency exits, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, telephone, and fire alarm
system
There are two important sources of information we need to get acquainted with when
using specific chemicals:
-the Material Safety Data Sheet, now called the Safety
Data Sheet.
-the Hazardous Material Labeling.
Every chemical manufacturer/importer who provides the science laboratory with chemicals and other
materials is required to provide:
a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
What is a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)?
This is a technical bulletin
detailing information about hazardous chemicals.
The MSDS must be written in ________ and contain
the following information:
-English
The chemical and common name of all ingredients having known health hazards present in
concentrations greater than 1%
The health hazards and primary routes of bodily entry of hazardous materials
The precautions for safe handling and use, along with procedures for spill/leak cleanup
The proper emergency first aid procedure
The date of preparation, name, address, and telephone number of the company or the
responsible employee distributing the MSDS.
Since __________, the _______________________ (OSHA) has requested
that the MSDS information be present in _______. In this technical bulletin called the
________, the information is uniformly organized into __ sections
-June 2015
-Occupational Safety and Health Administration
-a new format
-Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
-16
Section 1:
Identification: includes product identifier; manufacturer or distributor name,
address, phone number; emergency phone number; recommended use; restrictions on
use.
Section 2:
Hazard(s) identification includes all hazards regarding the chemical;
required label elements.
Section 3:
Composition/information on ingredients: includes information on chemical
ingredients, trade secret claims.
Section 4:
First-aid measures: includes important symptoms/effects, acute, delayed;
required treatment.
Section 5:
Fire-fighting measures lists suitable extinguishing techniques, equipment;
chemical hazards from fire.
Section 6:
Accidental release measures: lists emergency procedures; protective
equipment; proper methods of containment and cleanup.
Section 7:
Handling and storage: lists precautions for safe handling and storage,
including incompatibilities.
Section 8:
Exposure controls/personal protection: lists OSHA’s Permissible Exposure
Limits (PELs); ACGIH Threshold Limit Values (TLVs); and any other exposure limit
used or recommended by the chemical manufacturer, importer, or employer preparing
the SDS where available as well as appropriate engineering controls; personal protective
equipment (PPE).
Section 9:
Physical and chemical properties: lists the chemical’s characteristics.
Section 10:
Stability and reactivity: lists chemical stability and possibility of hazardous
reactions.
Section 11:
Toxicological information: includes routes of exposure; related symptoms, acute and chronic effects; numerical measures of toxicity.
Section 12:
Ecological information
Section 13:
Disposal considerations
Section 14:
Transport information
Section 15:
Regulatory information
Section 16:
Other information, includes the date of preparation or last revision.
Employers must ensure that SDSs are:
readily accessible to employees
In this lab, we allow the use of:
the MSDS and the SDS.
