Why is the female reproductive system prone to infection?
b/c its an open system that is highly vascularized
What is cystocele?
- bulging of anterior vaginal wall
- the urinary bladder is displaced downward
What is lithotomy?
bladder pushes anterior vaginal wall downward into vagina
What is rectocele?
bulging of posterior vaginal wall
What are the 3 stages of uterine prolapse?
stage 1 - cervix remains in vagina
stage 2 - cervix appears at the perineum or protrudes with straining
stage 3 - entire uterus protrudes outside body, total inversion of vagina.
Specialt implications for uterine prolapse and pelvic floor dysfunction?
- pelvic floor rehab
- suggest alternate sexual positions
- difficult to wt bear activities for long periods
- urinary incontinence - (pelvic floor, behavior training, trigger point therapy)
Clinical features of cervix cancer?
- discharge bloody and foul-smelling
- important to get yearly pap test
- decrease of menses in advanced CA
- metastis to urinary bladder and rectum
- Rx: surgical removal of cervix with radiation therapy and chemo (depending on stage)
What is endometriosis?
bengin endometrial tissue outside the uterus. (estrogen-dependent) and abnormal tissues fill with blood the same time a women cycles causing pain/discomfort.
Special implications for pelvic inflammatory disease?
- pelvic and/or back pain that is not musculoskeletal (send patient for consult)
- specialized soft tissue techniques for adhesions
