Quiz 4 Flashcards
Mitochondrial transfers
children with three parents
In Vitro Genetogenesis (IVG)
from skin cell to sex cell
solo IVG is possible in theory
ovarian transplants
removes ovaries and freezes them then implant for live birth
Chimeras
Creating human organs in animals
life span
defined only the time between birth and death
USED to be the best
worried about time, clocking into life and clocking out
health span
determines the quality of life
can be dependent upon education, access to health care, emotional connections, lifestyle choices and place of residence
BECOMING the best indicator of public health
not how many years but what you get out of those years
Education and health span
best educated Americans live 10-14 years longer than the least educated
the well educated have higher incomes, smoke less, follow doctors instructions, less likely to be overweight, college graduates are more likely to marry and stay married, married people suffer fewer heart attacks and strokes
catalyst
individuals, war, economic opportunities
catalysts are moving us toward “health span” mentality
palliative care
specialized medical care for people with serious illness
focus on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness
the goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family
foundations of global communication
triangulation, trilateration
triangulation
finding a position using triangles with known points (like a cell phone tower)
trilateration
finding a position from three distances.
it centers around finding your position on earth by knowing the location of orbiting GPS satellites and the distance from those satellites to your location on the planet
important program that led to space exploration
space shuttle program
newton’s first law
states that an object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force
orbital velocity
the velocity given to the body to keep it in orbit. This velocity is usually given to the artificial satellite so that it revolves round any particular planet
orbit paths
orbits are not freeways (360 degrees, size and shape can be adjusted)
objects at different heights move at different speeds in orbit
space station is 200 miles above earth and moves about 17,500 mph
types of orbits
polar orbit, geostationary orbit, circular orbit, elliptical orbit
polar orbit
go up and over the poles
allows satellite to go around as the earth rotates looking for climate patterns
geostationary orbit
a circular orbit 22,236 miles above the Earth’s equator and follows the direction of the earth’s rotation
orbital period is equal to earth’s rotational period, stays fixed in the sky
key point is line of sight
line of sight
global communication doesn’t happen without the line of sight between satellites
circular orbit
the orbit with a fixed distance around the barycenter, that is, in the shape of a circle
elliptical orbit
gets really close to earth for short time and then goes far away
GPS
radio waves are transverse waves similar to light (require line of sight)
GPS satellites work by sending out pulses of radio wave signals
requires triangulation and trilateration
have range of accuracy not 100% accurate
transmitting radio waves
can be affected by weather in space and on the earth, solar flares, the curve of the earth, and interference by objects such as power lines, radio stations, mountains and trees, buildings
atomic time and atomic clocks in the satellites
Pseudo Random Code (PRC), each satellite has its own
pseudo random code (PRC)
a very complicated digital code, or in other words, a complicated sequence of “on” and “off” pulses
equation that allows GPS to work
distance = rate X time
clock needs to provide the right time
uses for drones
photography, agriculture, surveillance, weather tracking, search and rescue, disaster relief
rules and regulations of drones
have to have certification (COA), LINE OF SIGHT (when flown for hobby), don’t fly within 5 miles of airport, don’t fly for commercial purposes or payment, 16 years old to become remote pilot, max altitude 400 ft (planes min altitude is 500 ft), daylight flights only
encryption
using a code, like an enigma
password entropy
randomness or chaos of the password
length is most critical
protects against brute force attack on password
social engineering
sometimes called marketing
using basic human nature against people
two factor authentication
two parts: something i know, something i have
ransomware
encrypts your hard drive and holds it ransom until you pay for the decryption code
cyrpto mining
extension will run while browser is open and will use hardware to mine crypto currency
steps used to protect identity, information, and privacy
keep software updated, don’t run as Admin on your PC, use multi factor passphrases, have a working backup, think and question everything
Write down two medical or scientific advancements that took place because of Henrietta Lacks’ cells.
Two advancements that stem from Henrietta Lack’s cells are IVF and vaccines. IVF developed as we learned how to keep cells alive outside the body and the polio vaccines was also developed from studying her cells.
Describe what benevolent deception is and how it was used as a common practice before ethical standards prevented it.
Benevolent deception is the idea that what someone doesn’t know won’t hurt them. Many doctors used these methods when they were developing the technologies of artificial insemination and IVF. Steptoe used it on the Browns when he performed the first case of IVF, he was very discrete and careful in his description of the process.
Give me two reasons why an insect-based diet is sustainable; give me one reason why it may be an unsustainable solution.
Insect based diets are sustainable because they are easy to farm as well as very nutritious and full of vitamins. The problem that insect based diets face are societal, in most cultures it’s frowned upon to eat insects.
Please complete the RISK ASSESSMENT EQUATION by telling me what goes in these blank spaces.
_____________________ + ________________________ + ______________________ = RISK
Hazards + Assets at Risk + Vulnerabilities = Risk
List three types of bias and briefly describe how each of them influence personal action or perspective.
Three types of bias are in-group bias, negativity bias, and a gambler’s fallacy. In-group bias causes us to be over confident in those who are part of our group and we exaggerate their capabilities. Negativity bias, we tend to look at all of the negative aspects of a debate, it’s a very pessimistic view. Gambler’s Fallacy, we put a lot of weigh on what will happen in the future based on what has happened in the past.
Why would someone consider having a digital baby before having a live baby? Specifically, give me a potential, but direct benefit.
Digital babies allow a couple to see how their children would turn out, they can see if they are a good match genetically. A potential benefit would be healthier children who have the best genes.
credentials
a user’s authentication information like username and password
cracking a password
a phrase we use for obtaining a password using malicious means. this may include a hacker trying to retrieve your password by simply guessing or using software to try thousands of password combinations
vulnerability
from a computer security standpoint, we use the term to represent any weakness in a computer system, hardware, or software
special characters
non alphabetic or numeric
!@#$%*
Authentication
a process that provides proof that the person who is trying to log in is, in fact, the correct person and authorized to access the network
brute force attack
a trial and error method used to obtain information, such as user passwords
phishing
process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames and passwords by masquerading as a trustworthy source by using bulk email. its a form of fraudulent social engineering
malware
an umbrella term used to refer to a wide variety of viruses, worms, Trojans, and other programs that a hacker can use to damage or steal from your computer
spoofing
tricking or deceiving computer systems.
between the planets and moons, most of the “space” around them is empty and just filled with gases (T/F)
