quiz 2- kingdoms Flashcards
what are the seven levels (taxon) of classification
kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species
what are the three main criteria that classification is based on
1) feeding type: autotroph, chemotroph, or hetrotroph
2) cell number: unicellular or multicellular
3) cell type: prokaryotic or eukaryotic
define autotroph, chemotroph, and heterotroph
autotroph- self feeders, gets energy from photosynthesis
heterotroph- must consume their food
chemotroph- consumes chemicals
define unicellular and multicellular
unicellular- one cell
multicellular- more than one cell
define prokaryotic and eukaryotic
prokaryotic- no nucleus
eukaryotic- nucleus
what are the six kingdoms
archaebacteria, eubacteria, protist, fungi, plant, and animap
archaebacteria
-found in harsh environments
-prokaryotic, heterotroph or chemotroph, unicellular
-cell walls without peptidoglycan
-reproduce asexually
eubacteria
-heterotrophic, autotrophic, prokaryotic, unicellular
-cell walks made of peptidoglycan
-come in 3 shapes
—> cocci-spheres, bacilli- rod, sprillia-corkscrew
-reproduce asexually but can exchange DNA using conjugation
what are the three basic shapes of eubacteria
-cocci (spheres)
-bacilli (rod shaped)
-sprilla( corkscrew)
protist
-eukaryotic, mostly unicellular, usually heterotrophs
-exception: algae and seaweed (autotroph and multicellular)
-subdivided by the way they move (cilia, flagella, pseudopodia)
what are the ways protists move
-cilia-hair particles that paddle like ores
-flagella- tail that propelles
-pseudopodia- false feet, pushes cytoplasm from inside.
fungi
-eukaryotic, heterotrophic, most multicellular
-important decomposers
-sessile (non mobile)
-cell walls made of chitin
-reproduce sexually and asexually
plant
-multicellular, eukaryotic m, autotrophs
-cell wall made of cellulose
-reproduce sexually and asexually
-sessile
animal
-multicellular, eukaryotic, heterotrophs
-don’t have cell walls
-most reproduce sexually
name two differences and two similarities between fungi and plants
different
-fungi walls made of chitin
-plant walls made of cellulose
-fungi heterotrophs, plants autotrophs
same
-both sessile
-reproduce sexually and asexually
name two differences and two similarities between bacteria and protist
different
-bacteria prokaryotic, protist eukaryotic
-bacteria always unicellular, protist can be multicellular
same
-both can be mobile
-both can be heterotrophic or autotrophic
name the kingdoms that are eukaryotic
animals, plants, fungi, protist
name the kingdoms that are heterotrophic and always sessile
fungi
name the kingdoms that mainly reproduce sexually
animals, plants
name the kingdoms that have unicellular and multicellular members
fungi and protist
name the kingdoms that have pepdoglycan in their cell wall
eubacteria
name the kingdoms that do not have a cell wall
animal
