quiz 1 Flashcards
what is biodiversity
a measure of how many different species live in an ecosystem
define species
organisms that are capable of breeding freely with eachother under natural conditions
to produce viable and fertile offspring
define ecosystem
all the abiotic and biotic factors in a given area
define abiotic and biotic
abiotic- not living/ never living
biotic- living/ once alive
what are the ambiguous cases for the definition of species
mules- (male donkey+female horse) ambiguous because they cannot create more mules
organisms that reproduce asexually- defined as species based on its physical characteristics
what are the 3 categories of bio diversity
1) genetic diversity - within the species there is a large variety within DNA ex. dogs
2) species diversity- within an area there is a variety in the number of types of species ex. rainforest
3) ecosystem biodiversity- refers to the diverse race of habitats, the various organisms that live in the habitats and their relationships that connect them ex. tundra vs rainforest
what is genetic diversity
within the species there is a large variety within DNA ex. dogs
what is species diversity
within an area there is a variety in the number of types of species ex. rainforest
what is ecosystem biodiversity
refers to the diverse range of habitats, the various organisms that line in the habitats, and their relationships that connect them ex. tundra vs rainforest
what is taxonomy
the science of classifying organisms (both living and extinct)
who developed the taxonomic system and when
Carl Linnaeus in the 1700s
what was the taxonomic system based on and what now plays a role in classification
based on structural and physical features (morphology)
today DNA sequence plays a role in classification
What are the rules of binomial nomenclature
-two parts
-first part of name - called the genus
—> first letter must be capitalized
—> this part can be written alone
-second part - called the species
—> not capitalized
—> never written alone
-both parts must be italicized
what are the seven levels (taxon) of classification
kingdom (6)
phylum
class
order
family
genus
species
what are the six parts of the kingdom classification
animal, bacteria x2, plant, fungi, protists
