Christians refused to worship the gods of the Roman Empire (including the emperor himself)
they refused political & military service which demanded idolatry & bloodshed
what did the Apologists teach about Incarnation?
- while the emperors were often considered gods, the divine nature of Jesus required much explanation
- not only for pagans, but for Christians as well
what did the Apologists teach about Christian rituals & beliefs?
celebrations of the Eucharist & other rituals were off limits for the un-baptized
this secrecy made them suspect to outsiders
prayers & creeds required explanation as well

- Romans were astounded by the Christians’ care for their own, as well as others who were poor
