quinolones Flashcards
mechanism of quinolones
binds to DNA gyrase and topo IV (not found in mammalian cells)
blocks DNA rep
bactericidal
first generation quinolone
nalidixic acid
naldixic acid - use
limited to treatment of UTIs
narrow gram - spectrum
second generation quinolones
ciprofloxacin
norfloxacin
second gen (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin) - use
increased gram - activity, some gram + chlamydia, mycoplasma (bacteria without cell wall) UTI GI STD skin infections gram - osteomyelitis S pnemonae resistance
third gen quinolones
levofloxacin
levofloxacin - use
broader gram + - spectrum
chlamydia, mycoplasm, strep pneumonae, meningitis by H influenzae
infection of sinuses, skin, lungs, ear, airway, bone, joints
communciable bacterial infections
fourth gen quinolone
moxifloxacin
moxifloxacin - use
added anaerobic coverage
poor pseudomonas coverage
NOT used for UTI, not excreted in urine
which classes of drugs cant be taken with antacids or milk
tetracyclines
