Questions Flashcards
1
Q
What are hormones?
A
- Hormones control emotions, cycles, impulses
- Transfers signals to organs, skin, tissue via blood
- Chemical messengers
- Carries instructions from cell to cell
- Controls energy used in the body, salt and sugar levels
2
Q
What are the primary endocrine glands?
A
- Hypothalamus
- Pituitary
- Thyroid
- Parathyroids
- Adrenals
- Reproductive glands
- Pineal
3
Q
How do hormones function?
A
- Released from gland and travels through bloodstream throughout the body until it reaches target destination
- Hormones attach to a receptor cell and controls that specific cell
- Receptor cells are paired with hormones by shape
4
Q
Where is the hypothalamus?
A
- Lower central part of the brain
- Below the thalamus and above your pituitary gland
- It sits directly above the brainstem at the base of your brain
5
Q
What is the sensory system?
A
The sensory system is a complex neural network of pathways that relay information about the external environment between the brain and body.
6
Q
What are the organs in the sensory system?
A
- Eyes: sense of sight
- Nose: sense of smell
- Tongue: sense of taste
- Ears: sense of hearing
- Skin: sense of touch
7
Q
What is the role of adrenaline?
A
- Triggers fight-or-flight response
- Response to stress by: elevating blood pressure, quickens heartbeat
- Sends signal to blood vessels to send more blood to brain
8
Q
Why is the pituitary gland called the master control gland?
A
It is also known as the master control gland of the endocrine system due to the fact that it regulates the system by controlling several other endocrine glands
9
Q
What is the transmission of sound?
A
- Sound waves enter the outer ear (pinna/auricle)
- Sound waves hit eardrum after travelling through the ear canal causing vibrations
- Sound moves through the middle ear and sound waves are amplified
- Sounds moves though the inner ear (cochlea) where vibrations are transformed into electrical signals by hair cells
- Signal/sound is interpreted by brain
