It represents the OPENING of the practice. Its standard text is: ‘Let us begin our practice of SwáSthya Yôga, by sitting in a firm and comfortable position, with the legs crossed and the back straight.’

It is cited from Pátañjali. Its purpose is to establish the relationship with the practitioner and to demonstrate that we value the culture and respect the Shástras.
7 – Why does the instructor recommend the practitioner to sit with the legs crossed during the practice of Yôga?
Sitting with the legs crossed avoids paranormal manifestations. Therefore, any supposedly “spiritual” incident during a SwáSthya class is classified as conscious or unconscious fraud.

It represents the CLOSURE of the practise. “[Let us finish our meditation] thus closing the ashtánga sádhana practice, opening the eyes, moving the hands to the prônam mudrá and greeting each other with the word “SwáSthya!”.
