Question 2 - Yoga Flashcards
1 – Write the term Yôga in dêvanágarí.
योग
2 – Demonstrate that the word Yôga has an accent:
In dêvanágarí, the accent (matra) is represented by an extra vertical dash, placed after the character and used to prolong the pronunciation of that syllable, which does not necessarily make the syllable tonic.
In our transliteration, regarding the letters a, u or i, the accent must be acute and, concerning the letters e or o, must be circumflex. Such an accent does not occur solely in the transliteration to Portuguese, but
is found in other languages such as in English and in Spanish, which, remarkably, do not possess in their orthography the circumflex accent!
